How many children do you have? Two kids! Austin is 18 and will be attending the University of Oklahoma in the fall. Clara is 9 and in 5th grade.
Your Business Names: My Chic Things, Chic Consulting and Chic Things Galleria
Brief Description of Your Business: I’m an Oklahoma teacher who followed my dream and opened a web boutique. I feature chic girly- girl items and unique gifts. A place where one can find items for wardrobes or gifts which are not in every department store or in all of the stores in the Mall!
What is your favorite beauty tip? Have someone else do your manicures and pedicures.
What did your mother teach you about beauty and fashion?
My mother has always been comfortable with herself and her classic, conservative wardrobe. She taught me to be true to myself. To wear what I love and not feel like I have to “give in” to every latest trend just because everyone else is doing it.
If you have a daughter, what tips will you be sure to share with her as she grows? Well, my daughter already has a mind of her own when it comes to fashion. She will ask my opinion on occasion which always makes me smile.
What is your favorite outfit in your closet and why? Oh, I love my black t-shirt with the black rhinestone Fleur de lis. Roger Taylor, the drummer for Duran Duran, sat on it.
What’s your favorite online site to shop for beauty or fashion? I love MyShape.com. I buy a lot of clothes there.
What motivates you to look your best? I never know who I’m going to run into when I’m out and about town. Plus looking good makes me feel good.
As a mom, “Me Time” is limited… what are your time saving beauty tips?
I only wash my hair every other day. It’s super thick, so I blow dry it until it’s only slightly damp before I try to style it.
Name one product you can’t live without: Juicy Couture Perfume
Heels or flats? Describe your favorite pair.
Flats! I love my brown suede Brighton flats. I have to have chic flats in black, brown and silver.
Lip gloss or Lip Stick? Which brand/color? Lip Gloss~Aveda . I have tons of colors!
Any additional comments on beauty and style you’d like to share: Add pizzazz to your favorite jeans and t-shirts with fabulous accessories. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to invent your own style. Adding a new piece of jewelry or a fun handbag can give your wardrobe that extra chic look that will make you feel fantastic!
An interview with Diva Boutiques
1. Share a little about your business and its products/services?
My Chic Things is a boutique that features chic accessories and unique gifts. It started over a year ago when I was standing in my closet looking for an item or two to dress up my jeans and t-shirt I had planned to wear out that day. I thought, how fun it would be to have a gift shop that offers great, affordable items to wear with your jeans and tees! I expanded my product line to include bath & body products because I'm addicted to them.
2. What makes your business unique when compared to others online boutiques in this category?
I like to think My Chic Things is unique in that I offer the best customer service on the web. I do my utmost to satisfy all my customers and make their shopping experience one to remember.
3. Where do you draw inspiration for your creations, products, or services?
I draw inspiration from walking around the mall, searching the internet and talking to friends.
4. What has been your proudest moment as a business owner?
My proudest moment as a business owner was my first sale. My whole family was sitting in the room and we all jumped for joy when my first order came in.
5. What product or service has been your best selling item? And Why?
Currently my best selling item is the Shemergency Kit by Ms & Mrs. I sell them by the case!
6. How are you able to balance your work and family life, while still continuing to nurture and grow your business?
Balancing everything in my life has been a challenge. I am now currently running three businesses, running a household and teaching first grade. I don't sleep too much.
7. If you could offer one piece of advice to other women business owners, what would that be?
The most important piece of advice I could offer other women business owners is to make sure you have plenty of start up money put aside. Starting a business on the web can be extremely expensive. Budget wisely and watch your advertising dollar. Form strong partnerships with other business owners and expect equal professionalism from them all.
8. Any other thoughts you'd like to share about your shop/boutique and your merchandise?
I would like to promote Chic Consulting which is my personal consulting business. I help women build blogs, top 100 sites lists, write press releases and much more. Everything that I have learned building my own business, I pass on to my clients.
